MBChB UTAS (SWD) Information for 2022 (and 2021 Entry)

Janna Forbs made this Official Information request to University of Auckland

The request was successful.

From: Janna Forbs

Dear University of Auckland,
In regards to entry into MBChB for last year’s applicants (into 2021), how many seats were available for SWD? I read that it was 4 last year (assuming 2 for FY students and 2 for graduates?). Will this be the same this year?

Also, I would like to know whether a GPA cutoff has been decided as of yet for first year applicants under this criteria.

Yours faithfully,

Janna Forbs

Dear Janna,

I refer to your request of 4 July 2021 for information concerning the
Disability UTAS category for the University’s MBChB programme. It appears
that you may have misunderstood data provided by the University in
response to a previous OIA request; accordingly our response includes an
explanation about relevant parts of the University’s admissions process.

Under the University’s UTAS Policy and Procedures, a reserved number of
places must be allocated in named undergraduate programmes and specified
for each UTAS group. However, it is not compulsory for Faculties to fill
all UTAS places. Unallocated UTAS places are first made available to full
UTAS categories, and then to the General admissions category. The full
policy is available here:
[1]https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/about/the-....

UTAS places are not reserved according to whether the applicant is
applying under the First Year pathway or the Graduate pathway – i.e. First
Year applicants and Graduate applicants in the Disability UTAS category
are competing for the same places.

For the 2021 MBChB programme, there were 2 places initially allocated to
the Disability UTAS category. As part of the admissions process, three
unallocated UTAS places were subsequently made available to the Disability
UTAS category, allowing five applicants (four First Year, 1 Graduate) to
be placed in the 2021 MBChB. For the 2022 MBChB programme, two places have
been initially allocated to the Disability UTAS category.

The FY interview GPA cut-off for the Disability UTAS category is
determined early November based on the GPAs of FY applicants in that
category. As the information requested does not yet exist, this part of
your request is also refused under section 18(g) of the OIA.

You have the right to make a complaint to an Ombudsman if you are
dissatisfied with this response.

Yours sincerely,

Rebecca Ewert

General Counsel

University of Auckland
