Hi Greg
I refer to your email dated 11 November 2014 requesting information on
bike racks on Metro buses.
Please find the reply to your request below.
1) The number of passenger trips annually that have used the bike
racks.
Jan-Dec 2013: 39,925
Jan-Oct 2014: 40,281 (ie year to date)
2) The annual operating costs associated with the bike racks.
The annual operating cost of the racks is approximately $150 per bike rack
per year
3) Any known safety or operational issues that have been raised
regarding use of the bike racks.
We are aware of two safety operational events that have occurred since the
introduction of the bike racks.
· A user of the rack got a slight cut on his hand due to the
fettle on the plastic moulding of the rack. Following the accident we
asked the operators to remove any sharp edges from the plastic.
· A bus ran into the back of a car and impacted the bike rack. No
action resulted as there was no cycle on the rack. If a cycle had been
damaged then it would have been insured by the operator to a maximum value
of $1,500.

While patronage trends for cyclists and wheelchair users travelling by bus
are up compared to the same quarter in 2013, steady growth over the past
couple of month probably reflects on the weather conditions.
You will be aware that if you are not satisfied with this response you are
able to refer this matter to the Office of the Ombudsman under s27 (3) of
the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987.
Should you require any further information or clarification, please do not
hesitate to contact me.
Kind regards,
Charles
