Statistics around ages of board members

Tony Meyer made this Official Information request to Ministry of Education

Ministry of Education did not have the information requested.

From: Tony Meyer

Dear Ministry of Education,

Please provide whatever statistics you have available regarding the ages of Board of Trustee members of NZ schools. The age of the youngest and oldest members (not identifying the individuals, of course) and the average (arithmetic mean) age are of most interest, but if you have other such statistics available, I would appreciate those as well.

If you have this data broken down by year (since 1989) and/or by member type (student elected, parent elected, staff elected, principal, co-opted, appointed) please provide that.

Yours faithfully,

Tony Meyer

Dear Mr Meyer

Thank you for your email requesting statistics on the ages of Board of Trustee members of New Zealand schools.

Your request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act).

All the statistics that the Ministry collects about Board of Trustee members is analysed and published on the Education Counts website. You can access this information using the following link www.educationcounts.govt.nz/statistics/s.... The data can be viewed by a range of dimensions, based on the individual, their role on the board, the school, and the school’s location.

However, the data collection does not include the age of board members. Therefore your request for this specific information has been refused under section 18(e) of the Act as the information does not exist.

We do know that the youngest board member could be a student in Year 9 at the school. Under section 94(1)(f) of the Education Act 1989 boards of state and state integrated schools with students above Year 9 have a student trustee on the Board. There is no upper age limit for being a board member.

I hope you find the information on Education Counts useful.

Under sections 19 and 28(3) of the Act you have the right to ask an Ombudsman to review this response.

Yours sincerely

Susan Dey
