Where will the Energy to power EV vehicles come from?
Micky Turner made this Official Information request to James Shaw
The request was successful.
From: Micky Turner
Dear James Shaw,
Can you please supply the following information:
1. Details of the energy infrastructure the Government has put in place to provide energy for electric vehicles since October 2017?
2. Details of any work underway on massive energy projects for the purpose of ensuring enough energy is available for electric vehicles.
3. Evidence via detailed forecasts of how the energy infrastructure the Labour/Greens government have put in place or are planning to put in place - will provide enough energy for the number of electric vehicles you are planning to have on New Zealand roads from now until 2040 (a year by year breakdown).
4. Detailed analysis of what the benefits of EV's are over H2 Hydrogen vehicles and petrol/diesel vehicles - including - environmental advantages/disadvantages (lithium mining, concrete & steel in windmills etc) - and what would happen to the country in the event of a large scale, long duration power blackout or natural disaster if personal vehicles and commercial trucks are electric only (i.e. difficulty moving supplies etc).
5. Information on any plans to roll out a Hydrogen powered economy including proposed infrastructure.
Recently there was information in the news that if 7 EV's fast charge on the same street - it could knock out the grid. I would like to draw your attention to the 5 week Auckland blackout/power crisis of 1998.

Hi James,
Reference note = yesterdays news article on energy availability shortage & price volatility:
_________________________________________________________________________________
Businesses are being hit by massive rises to their power bills as dry weather and a natural gas shortage wreak havoc in the electricity market.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars in extra costs are hitting firms as they look to renew their fixed power contracts.
RNZ understands the new power contract for supermarket operator Foodstuffs is 70 per cent more expensive.
The company would not comment on the specifics, but in a statement its North Island chief executive Chris Quin said it had seen significant increases in its power bill.
"The combination of price increases is affecting our stores across the board, large and small, and a lot of effort is going into trying to find efficiencies to manage prices to consumers.
"It is particularly hard for our smaller stores with a number of cost impacts from recent policy changes, compliance costs, talent shortages and supply chain costs," he said.
RNZ also spoke to the chief executive of a large commodity business, who did not want to be named, who said he thought he got off lightly when its new contract only rose by 43 per cent.
Another company with offices nationwide, who would not comment on the record, said it was facing price hikes of several hundred thousand dollars per year.
"[The high power prices are] going to find its way through into prices of consumer goods and other goods, alongside things like supply chain pressures, wage pressures, the whole Covid background to everything."

Dear M Wood (MIN),
Ok, thank you - I think the fact James Shaw is passing off questions which are fundamentally related to his policies on the environment and climate change - shows the Green Party are idealistic and willing to rollout changes - without enough scientific research, evidence, public consultation and practical measures in place to implement those changes.
To be frank - the amount of air miles James Shaw has clocked up flying around the world in the last 4 years - he should have all the answers to my questions readily available.

Dear Marissa,
I think it's ok - perhaps the fact you need to engage consultants tells us what we need to know - the Green Party did not do a lot of work in this area.
Someone pointed out this article and it seems relevant:
https://www.businessinsider.com.au/elect...
The above article indicates that it would be reasonable to ease up on the ute tax for some time.
There is no evidence to say that current batteries are environmentally friendly.
I am withdrawing this request.

Dear Marissa,
I note there has been no adequate response to Paul Jones & I am therefore reinstating my request.
(you will be able to send the information to both of us)

Green Party & Labour Party MP's sat in opposition for 9 years costing taxpayers around $100m. Plus 4 years in Government = 13 years. If you don't have the analysis, evidence & planning to back up your decisions - you are just playing make believe.

Hi Megan,
Thank you for taking the time to put the information together.
There are a few areas of concern:
1. There is no year by year forecast analysis of how much electricity we will need for the amount of EV's the Government intends to have on the road. So we seem to be going into this blind.
2. This report is from 2015 and on page 31 it absolutely skims over any issues with lithium mining - (actually it doesn't address them at all by todays standards).
https://www.eeca.govt.nz/assets/EECA-Res...
This report from 2021 on page 37 also offers a very brief skimming over of the disadvantages of EV's.
https://www.eeca.govt.nz/assets/EECA-Res...
3. No report has ever been carried out on what would happen during a prolonged power outage from natural causes or war. Stored H2 hydrogen would absolutely be the best energy solution in this situation.
Personally I would buy a 4x4 hydrogen vehicle if New Zealand had the infrastructure to refuel. I believe a lot of people are being unfairly targeted by a ute tax - purely to fund a small group of rich people into ownership of very expensive EV's - without proper evidence that EV's are the ultimate environmentally friendly transport of the present or the future.
Actually the ute tax is just building resentment towards alternative energy - when maybe ute owners have a better grasp on how to refuel in the future than James Shaw and David Parker.
https://www.am-online.com/news/manufactu...
https://www.driven.co.nz/news/hydrogen-p...
https://www.motoring.com.au/ineos-grenad...
Thank you for highlighting the extensive work already underway on building a hydrogen powered economy. New Zealand has an opportunity to become self sufficient and to eventually stop importing billions of dollars of oil every year.
Thanks again for your time!
Kindest regards - Micky Turner

Lithium mining - environmental issues - dangerous working conditions - child labour
https://www.nsenergybusiness.com/feature...
excerpt -
One of the main issues in Chile, though, is the water consumption associated with lithium mining. For every tonne of lithium produced, 500,000 gallons of water is used.
In Salar de Atacama, mining activities consumed up to 65% of the region’s water, causing havoc for local farmers.
