Standards New Zealand Documentation Regarding Use of "New Crop" Radiata

Edward Grove made this Official Information request to Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment

Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment did not have the information requested.

From: Edward Grove

Dear Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment,

Between approximately 1996 and 2002 a Standards New Zealand committee was examining, and liaising with the forestry industry regarding, whether the "reduced properties" of "New Crop" (i.e. second rotation) radiata pine met the requirements of the then existing timber grades, - I would like to receive copies of all submissions to the Standards committee on the issue, and any responses/analysis/determinations made by the committee.

Yours faithfully,

Ed Grove

Tçnâ koe Mr Grove

I refer to your Official Information Act request dated 2 July 2020, as
acknowledged below.

I am writing to you because the Ministry of Business, Innovation and
Employment (MBIE) has considered your request under the provisions of the
Act, and so far, our searches have yielded no results. This may be because
the information you have requested relates to material that is
approximately 20 years old, and as a result, may not be held by MBIE
anymore. Further, the Committee would have pre-dated Standards New
Zealand’s move into MBIE.

Before we make a decision on your request, however, we wanted to check if
you know what specific standard the Committee you refer to in your request
was examining? If we knew this information, it may help narrow down our
search. Any additional detail you can provide would be much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance

Ngâ mihi

From: Edward Grove

Hi,

The Standards Committee would likely have been considering standard nos. "NZS 3631:1988 New Zealand timber grading rules" and/or "NZS 3602: Timber and wood-based products for use in building".

The current version of NZS 3631 has a introductory note on Standards New Zealand's website that the standard "Establishes visual grading rules for the selection of timber into quality classes. Four types of grades have been specified. Provision has also been made for new crop radiata pine."

The New Zealand Journal of Forestry Journal, volume 47(3): 41 (2002) at page 41 recorded in the "President's comments" (available online at http://www.nzjf.org.nz) in relation to NZS 3602 that "A SNZ committee has been working for some time now to align radiata pine strength and stiffness properties with timber grades to take account of the reduced and variable properties of "New crop" radiata pine".

Yours sincerely,

Edward Grove
