- Location by district;
- Peer assessors with lived experience of disability;
- How many assessors speak Te Reo, New Zealand Sign Language or have english as their second language;
- How many peer assessors are also paid as Arts Council of New Zealand Toi Aotearoa staff.
Submitted Applications
- Within the last three years, what is the break down of applications have been submitted in English, Te Reo, and New Zealand Sign Language?

Dear Nic,
Apologies.
We do not currently capture what language applications are submitted in. Creative New Zealand allows for applications to be submitted in Te Reo Maori, NZ Sign language and in English. On average we receive 10 – 15 applications in Te Reo per financial year, no applications in NZ Sign Language, and the remainder of applications in English.
Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions.

Dear Pip O'Flaherty,
In regards to that last question, I would prefer it in hard data so we have something to measure against going forward. This would enable us to start to question if the under-representation of NZSL is because the portal is currently not built for everybody.
From the list of peer assessors I received from Jess Waugh (24 Jan) it included Catherine George, Catherine Falstie-Jensen, Elena Coyes and maybe some other employees that I’m unaware of. Can you confirm if these are current staff members they have not assessed applications since they became ‘external’.
Yours sincerely,
Nic Lane

Dear Nic,
Sorry if was not clear but we do not currently have a systematic method of capturing the applications submitted in Te Reo and New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL).
I can definitely confirm that we have not received any applications in NZSL in the past three years. The Assessment Services Team have advised 10 - 15 Te Reo applications in the past three financial years. They can be confident in this range as a process is required to arrange the relevant assessors.
Would you like to discuss your queries with any of the team? I'm happy to arrange if this would be useful. I will also raise this with our Business Systems Team as they constantly work to improve functionality in all areas of the system.

Dear Pip O'Flaherty,
I requested the most recent list of peer assessors on the 7th November, and received it today, 21 Nov from Bonnie Low.
From my count without a full list of Arts Council of New Zealand Toi Aotearoa employees, there are still six employees included on the list, which is counter to your statement (14 Oct):
"Arts Council of New Zealand Toi Aotearoa staff are not eligible to be peer assessors for Creative New
Zealand as this would create a conflict of interest in their role with Creative New Zealand."
Just wondering if you could explain?
Yours sincerely,
Nic Lane

Arts Council of New Zealand Toi Aotearoa
Dear Nic,
I can confirm that the statement is correct.
I have confirmed with Penny Chitty, Manager, Assessment Services who is responsible for the peer assessor register, that the staff names listed on the register have been created for the purposes of user testing or peer assessor support as the portal viewed by assessors is different than the Creative New Zealand internal Customer Relationship Management system.
We appreciate that this is confusing and does not reflect a true registered list of assessors. This list is being corrected and moving forward user testing accounts are to be tagged differently on the register.
It is also important to note that not all assessors listed on the register are used by Creative New Zealand – registration is a nomination process and selection to be used for a funding round is based on a number of factors and the skills and experiences needed each time.
If you have any concerns about the use of peer assessors or the registration process, Penny is happy to meet to discuss further.
