Tēnā koe e Nic,

Thank you for your request for information on the number of Creative New
Zealand funding applications that have been submitted in Te Reo Māori over
the last three financial years (2020/21, 2020/19, 2018/19).

Applications in te reo Māori have been low over this period (less than
five per year).  As an example, in the 2020/21 financial year we received
two applications in te reo rangatira, from a total of 57, seeking support
from our Toi Ake – Mātauranga Māori Te Awe Kōtuku Fund. This fund supports
marae, hapū, iwi, whakapapa-based rōpū and mātāwaka to protect, cultivate
and retain mātauranga Māori related to heritage ngā toi Māori and foster
their distinctive arts and cultural practices.

While the numbers of applications written in te reo are low, we are
receiving an increasing number of calls from applicants (prior to making
their application) who seek and receive advice from our Funding Service
Adviser and Arts Practice Director - Māori in te reo.  We have also
coordinated zui (zoom hui) with the ngā toi Māori sector where Māori
artists and arts practitioners can kōrero with Creative New Zealand staff
in te reo to discuss the application process and pātai in te reo Māori.

Applications submitted in te reo Māori are assessed by external assessors
who are fluent or have a high degree of competency in te reo Māori.

If you have any questions about this topic or the Official Information Act
process Creative New Zealand uses, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Nāku me aku mihi

Mōrena Pip,

Thanks for your reply. Great to hear about the oral support available.

If applicants are more comfortable to kōrero Māori will that mean the application process perhaps shifts to oral submissions being an option in the future?

Are the questions in the Toi Ake – Mātauranga Māori Te Awe Kōtuku Fund asked in Te Reo Māori? And are their plans to incorporate Te Reo Māori questions across other funds on the portal to encourage approachability?

Yours sincerely,

Nic Lane [he/him]

Mōrena Nic,

Thanks for your email.

Yes. Applicants to the Toi Ake – Mātauranga Māori Te Awe Kōtuku Fund can contact the Adviser, Funding Services - Māori or the Arts Practice Director - Māori to make verbal or written email enquiries in te reo Māori but the application process on our current portal is in English.

We will continue to look at ways we can make our systems as accessible and approachable as possible but do not have a date as to when we may be able to provide the application process entirely in te reo Māori.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions.

Ngā mihi
Pip
