Privacy policy and assessment for smart homes

Alex Harris made this Official Information request to Kāinga Ora–Homes and Communities

The request was successful.

From: Alex Harris

Dear Housing New Zealand Corporation,

A news report today reports that Housing NZ has smart home sensors installed in 160 homes and is planning to roll the program out to 2,000 homes by May 2020 ("Housing NZ scopes sensor roll-out to 2,000 state homes", Reseller News, 22 May 2019). I would like to request the following information under the OIA:

* what information is collected by the sensors and at what interval (e.g. is it every minute, or every hour)?
* whether the tenants of these homes are informed of the presence of the sensors;
* A copy of any privacy policy relating to the sensors provided to tenants;
* A copy of any policy relating to use of the sensors data by Housing New Zealand;
* A copy of any privacy impact assessment relating to the sensors.

I would prefer to receive an electronic response. Queries about this request will be automatically forwarded to me by the fyi.org.nz website.

With regards to s12 of the OIA, I am an NZ citizen and in NZ.

Yours faithfully,

Alex Harris
