Criteria for extension grants in counselling services academic appointments
Bailley Verry made this Official Information request to University of Auckland
The request was successful.
From: Bailley Verry
Dear University of Auckland,
I would like to inquire about the criteria used for determining whether or not students should be granted assignment extensions in academic appointments with the university's counselling service.
1. What circumstances are grounds for an extension through these means?
2. What circumstances are not grounds an extension through these means that are specifically outlined in policy?
3. What are the policies regarding mental health issues?
Yours faithfully,
Bailley Verry

Dear Bailley,
I refer to your request of 9 April 2019 for “criteria for extension grants
in counselling services academic appointments”.
“I would like to inquire about the criteria used for determining whether

appointments with the university's counselling service.

The University’s Student Health and Counselling Service does not grant
assignment extensions in academic appointments. The Student Health and
Counselling Service can provide a student with a certificate which can be
used to justify an absence or in support of an application for an
extension due to illness or compassionate considerations. Decisions about
whether students are granted assignment extensions are made according to
the relevant process for the Faculty/programme area. There is no
University-wide policy on assignment extensions.
“3. What are the policies regarding mental health issues?”
The University’s policies are publicly available at the Policy Hub at
[1]https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/about/the-...
Mental health conditions are specifically addressed as disabilities at the
policy level in the Equity Policy
([2]https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/about/the-...),
the Staff with Disabilities Policy
([3]https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/about/the-...),
and the Undergraduate Targeted Admission Schemes Policy and Procedures
([4]https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/about/the-...).
Mental health is also addressed in the University’s Health and Wellness
Standards and Procedures
([5]https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/about/the-...).
Mental health issues may also be relevant to the application of other
Statutes, Regulations, Rules and Policies, procedures and processes
throughout the University.
Yours sincerely,
Rebecca Ewert
