Dear Johnny,

I refer to your request of 20 January 2022. The University’s response
follows:

“(1) The number of students in the past 10 years who committed suicide
while being on campus. Being on campus in this instance is defined as
including both university grounds and student accommodation. Please
provide a total figure as well as a breakdown by year.“

See attached.

“(2) The number of students in the past 10 years who have requested mental
health counseling services on campus. Please provide a total figure and a
breakdown of numbers by year and faculty. “

See attached statistics for 2012-2021 on University Health and Counselling
Services mental health and counselling appointments. Unfortunately,
creating a breakdown by Faculty cannot be done without taking excessive
staff time. This constitutes a partial refusal of your request under
section 18(f) of the OIA. Neither extending the time limit for the
University’s response, imposing a charge, or consulting with you would
allow the University to provide a breakdown by Faculty.

“(3) Whether the university keeps track of serious mental health incidents
both on campus and in student accommodation, AND “

“(4) If the university does keep track of serious mental health incidents,
the number of serious mental health incidents which have occurred over the
past 10 years. Please provide a total figure as well as statistics of any
and all types of disciplinary action imposed on those who perpetrated such
acts.”

The University does not specifically track “serious mental health
incidents”. The University does record referrals to community mental
health services, but these are not usually the result of an “incident” and
can be for varying reasons other than serious mental health issues. This
constitutes a refusal of your request under section 18(g) of the OIA.

You have the right to make a complaint to an Ombudsman if you are
dissatisfied with this response.

Yours sincerely,

Rebecca Ewert

General Counsel

University of Auckland
