Dear Sam,

Thank you for your request under the Local Government Official Information
and Meetings Act 1987.

As confirmed in the letter sent by Ms Colwell (May 28), your request has
been received and is being dealt with.  The information you have requested
on staff positions is being gathered for you.

You have requested all documents on 'any proposal to amalgamate the
Council with neighbouring Councils'.

There has not been any actual amalgamation proposal to date.  There has
however been significant discussion over 3 years on whether local
government reform is needed and if so what shape that reform might take.
There are many hours of work in identifying every document Council holds
relating to this and the search would return hundreds of documents.  Given
the time required to provide these documents Council would be likely to
charge you for this work at a labour charge of $38.80 for every half hour
taken, after the first hour.  My current estimate is that it could take
between 6 and 8 hours to provide the information.  You have a right to
apply to the Ombudsman for a review of these charges.

Before we get to the point of charging however, I wonder if you wanted to
refine your request.  Is there any particular information you are looking
for?

Feel free to ring me to discuss this as we would like to help.

Yours sincerely,

Moira Lawler

Moira,

As i'm not backed by a media agency or lobby group (i'm a student) i'd like to avoid any costs.

If possible, could you send any documents produced in response to the Greater Wellington draft amalgamation discussion document?

Yours sincerely,

Sam Fraser
