Registered sex offenders

Alecia Bailey made this Official Information request to Ministry of Justice

Ministry of Justice did not have the information requested.

From: Alecia Bailey

Dear Ministry of Justice,

Can you please tell me under the OIA how many registered sex offenders currently live in the Manawatu region?

How many registered sex offenders are there currently in New Zealand?
- How many of these registered sex offenders are immigrants?
- How many of these registered sex offenders are in a location unknown or at large?

Yours faithfully,

Alecia Bailey

We don't currently have a system of sex offender registration, so I'd say that there'd be 0 registered sex offenders. You may want to try to clarify your request a little bit.

Dear Ministry of Justice,

In regards to my request about registered sex offenders - please replace the word registered with convicted.

I understand there is no system of registration for sex offenders at this stage.

Yours faithfully,

Alecia Bailey

Ministry of Justice

Hi Alecia,

Thank you for your email regarding convicted sex offenders.

We have been informed that the Ministry of Justice does not hold the
information you are seeking.

To help you with your query however, the Ministry consulted the Police.
They noted that they would not have the numbers of sex offenders resident
anywhere at any one time -  this would depend on the specified bail or
release conditions. Police also note that the management of these people
goes to the Corrections Department.

Consequently your query should de directed to the Department of
Corrections.

Kind regards,

Corrections are unlikely to tell you anything. Under OIA government departments either pass the buck or manufacture excuses for not supplying information.

Yeah, I hate it when they manufacture those excuses, saying things like "there is no such thing as a registered sex offender" in New Zealand or "there is no sex offender registry"
