Information about dashcams installed in police cars

Hugh Davenport made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police

New Zealand Police did not have the information requested.

From: Hugh Davenport

Dear New Zealand Police,

This is a follow up to https://fyi.org.nz/request/9292-informat....

As I'm still confused whether dashcam's exist or not (as got a response saying they didn't, but then later a response asking for an extension that has passed), I'm making the request again.

I would like to know whether any dashcams or similar systems are installed in police cars. If so, I would like to know how long any data stored on them is retained for.

Yours faithfully,

Hugh Davenport

Good afternoon

I can confirm that the initial response you received is the correct one.
The extension was mistakenly sent to you by the team handling your
requests. I apologise for any inconvenience this has caused.

Regards

Renee

Dear MAUNDER, Renee,

Cool thank you. It is a bit unusual that the Police would request a extension for something based on no knowledge. Is it the Police's policy to just request extensions for OIA's when the handling team doesn't know what the request is about and how much effort it requires? I would have thought that any decision to request an extension could be backed up by details on how long the request has taken so far, and how long it is expected to take, rather than just picking a date out of thin air and stating that to get around the 20 day timeframe.

Hopefully you have taken this onboard, and can improve your handling of OIA's as an agency. I note that this isn't the first time that an OIA request has been mishandled by the Police for me. I would expect consistency and due diligence to be applied at all times.

Yours sincerely,

Hugh Davenport
