Info about dog body disposal and manner of euthanasia

arthur prentice made this Official Information request to Far North District Council

This request has been reported as needing administrator attention (perhaps because it is vexatious, or a request for personal information)

From: arthur prentice

Dear Far North District Council,

I have questions about the euthanasia and disposal of dogs:

At how many locations are the bodies of dogs disposed?
Are there covers on the dog pits at each of these locations?
What are the covers made of?
Are there locks on the covers?
After being euthanised, are dogs put immediately into the pit, or stored elsewhere for a period of time? If so, where?
Are any duties in relation to disposal of dog bodies undertaken by anyone other than the ACO’s or the team leader? If so, what duties?
If there are any people or organisations contracted to undertake any duties relating to the disposal of dog bodies, please provide a copy of any contract for those duties.
Since 2016, have dogs or puppies ever been killed in any manner other than by injection at the vet?

Yours faithfully,

Arthur Prentice

Mr Arthur Martin Prentice

By email only:    [FOI #8182 email]

Dear Mr Prentice

Official Information Request – RFS 3897650

I refer to your official information request received 2 July 2018
regarding dog pounds. Your request has been referred to Legal Services for
consideration under the provisions of the Local Government Official
Information and Meetings Act 1987 (“the LGOIMA”).

Your questions and Council responses are as follows:

 1. At how many locations are the bodies of dogs disposed?

Council leases land at one location to dispose of dog bodies.

 2. Are there covers on the dog pits at each of these locations?

Yes. In order to ensure the safety of staff and the land owner, covers are
installed over the dog pits.

 3. What are the covers made of?

The covers are made of wood.

 4. Are there locks on the covers?

Yes. In order to ensure the safety of staff and the land owner, locks are
on the dog pit covers.

 5. After being euthanised, are dogs put immediately into the pit, or
stored elsewhere for a period of time? If so, where?

Council operates two dog pound facilities, one in Horeke and the other in
Kaitaia. If a dog is euthanised, on behalf of Council, by a veterinarian
in Okaihau, Kaikohe, or Kerikeri these dogs are immediately placed into
the dog pits. If a dog is euthanised, on behalf of council, by a
veterinarian in Kaitaia these dogs require transport to the dog pit
location. On some occasions, dogs are not immediately placed into the dog
pits until transport is arranged. Until transport is arranged, these dogs
are kept at the Kaitaia dog pound.

 6. Are any duties in relation to disposal of dog bodies undertaken by
anyone other than the ACO’s or the team leader? If so, what duties?

No. These duties are undertaken by Council Animal Management.

 7. If there are any people or organisations contracted to undertake any
duties relating to the disposal of dog bodies, please provide a copy
of any contract for those duties.

Not applicable.

 8. Since 2016, have dogs or puppies ever been killed in any manner other
than by injection at the vet?

No. All euthanising procedures are conducted by a veterinarian.

Thank you for your enquiry.

Yours faithfully
