Official information request: Aviation Safety and RPAS/Drones In Controlled Airspace
Please supply the following information under the Official Information Act (OIA):
In the Stuff news item “Air NZ calls for tougher drone restrictions after near-miss with plane”, DILEEPA FONSEKA, Last updated 17:59, March 27 2018, they report -
“Airways, the company which operates air traffic control at Auckland Airport, said at least one drone a week is spotted flying illegally through controlled airspace in New Zealand”
Please provide details of these NZ-wide controlled airspace incidents
- for the period 01 January 2016 to 31 March 2018
listing –
- date and time
- location, and Aerodrome name and ICAO code if within 4 km
- RPAS details
- details of other aircraft involved
- nature of the incident, including details of people, and any injuries…
- agencies informed, involved and their actions – eg. CAA, Police, Airways, TAIB, military…
- outcomes – eg. Court case, fines, drone/operator not found…

What is apparent is how little information aviation safety organisations have rapid access to, on a supposed threat that could potentially (maybe) shut down aviation as we know it.
Well, according to some shrill nay-sayers...
And how these organisations operate strictly within their 'little boxes'
