Police pursuit policy and statistics

Mark Hanna made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police

The request was successful.

From: Mark Hanna

Tēnā koutou,

I’m trying to find statistics regarding police pursuits in New Zealand, including the rates of injuries and deaths during these pursuits. I have found some summarised statistics for the period from April 2004 - May 2007[1] and a couple of other isolated statistics on the NZ Police website and in media reports. However, I have not been able to find any more recent or specific statistics on this topic.

Please release the following information:

1. The current New Zealand Police pursuit policy.
1a. All past iterations of the New Zealand Police pursuit policy that were in use from 1 January 2012, and the dates on which they were introduced.

Please release the following information, broken down by month, from January 2012 until the most recent month for which data is available:

2. The number of police pursuits.
3. The number of police pursuits that were abandoned.
4. The number of police pursuits that resulted in at least one injury.
4a. The number of injuries that were the result of a police pursuit, broken down by offender and police officer.
5. The number of police pursuits that resulted in at least one death.
5a. The number of deaths that were the result of a police pursuit, broken down by offender and police officer.

Please provide all information in an accessible, searchable format. A spreadsheet format, such as CSV or XLSX, is preferable for tabular data.

Please also explain any relevant caveats that should be kept in mind when analysing this information, including the licence under which it is released.

If any part of my request is unclear, please don't hesitate to contact me.

If any of the information that I have requested is unavailable or would be difficult to retrieve, but similar information might be readily available, I would be happy to discuss altering or refining my request.

Ngā mihi,
Mark Hanna

Dear Mr Hanna

I refer to your Official Information Act request of 12 February 2018 for
information on New Zealand Police pursuit policies.

The purpose of this email is to notify you that Police requires an
extension of time in which to respond to your request, pursuant to section
15A(1) of the Official Information Act 1982, because the request
necessitates a search through a large quantity of information and
consultations such that a proper response to the request cannot reasonably
be made within the original time limit.

Police require until 19 March 2018 to provide a substantive response to
your request.

Kind regards

Salote Talagi

Tēnā koe,

Given the current public interest in this topic due to the three deaths within the past week associated with police pursuit, I hope that this request might now be treated urgently. I'd appreciate it if a response could be sent as soon as reasonably practicable and no later than Friday the 16th of March, so that it will be available before the coming weekend.

Ngā mihi,
Mark Hanna
