Statistics on illness (eg gastro) directly attributable to consuming Christchurch city supply water
Martin Smallman made this Official Information request to Christchurch City Council
The request was successful.
From: Martin Smallman
Dear Christchurch City Council,
I am requesting statistics on the number of illnesses, including but not limited to gastrointestinal illness which are directly attributable to consumption of contaminated Christchurch City Council supplied water. (ie water delivered to properties in the CCC rating area from council owned bore heads via CCC owned infrastructure) since the September 2010 earthquake event.
In addition I request test results from all Christchurch bore heads showing levels of waterborne pathogens likely to cause above mentioned sickness.
Yours faithfully,
Martin Smallman

On 23 February 2018, we extended the timeframe on our response to you by

Council Response
The Council is not aware of any illness which has been directly
attributable to consumption of the Christchurch City water supply. This
has been confirmed by the CDHB.
I have attached a link to the 12 February 2018 Infrastructure, Transport
and Environment Committee agenda which includes details on our water
testing for November and December, including cases where E.Coli is
present.

As the data illustrates, the Council takes a large number of samples; in
fact our testing exceeds what is expected to comply with the Drinking
Water Standards for New Zealand.
This table shows the total number of E.Coli transgressions over the past 5
years.
You may also like to refer to our chlorination webpage which has a map of
all areas where we are chlorinating the water (which we carry out when
completing infrastructure maintenance).
