Recognition of Myanmar over Burma
Joshua Grainger made this Official Information request to Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade
The request was successful.
From: Joshua Grainger
Dear Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade,
It was revealed in the press recently that New Zealand has recognized the country that John Key has recently visited as Myanmar. This was apparently a reversal of a policy decision two years ago to intead recognize the country as Burma. I would like to request under the Official Information Act some information related to this.
I would like to request:
* Any Cabinet papers, briefings, reports, aide memoire, or other such documents on the recent decision to recognize Myanmar over Burma
* Any Cabinet papers, briefings, reports, aide memoire, or other such documents on the decision of approximately two years ago to recognize Burma over Myanmar
If my request is big enough to trigger a s18(f) refusal or a charge (or if it is just easier), I would like to instead request a list of the titles of documents and dates so that I can narrow down my request. If any documents are withheld in full I would also like to instead request the titles and dates of these documents.
Feel free to contact me if you wish me to clarify my request. I've had problems with emails not being received by MFAT before, so can I please have an acknowledgement email?
Yours faithfully,
Joshua Grainger

Dear MORRIS, Janet (IMD/ESD),
Can I please have an update on the status of my OIA request? According to the Ombudsman's calculator a response was due on the 21st of December, and it has now been a month since then.
Yours sincerely,
Joshua Grainger

I've got a complaint in with the Ombudsman at the moment.
I suspect that there maybe a political motive for withholding: I filed a complaint in January, and in my experience delay-denial complaints are resolved rather quickly.
