Interviewing of child witnesses

Ross Francis made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police

Response to this request is long overdue. By law New Zealand Police should have responded by now (details and exceptions). The requester can complain to the Ombudsman.

From: Ross Francis

Dear New Zealand Police,

I have the following information request regarding the interviewing of child witnesses.

How has the interviewing of child witnesses changed from 1992 to today?

Is the information obtained from child witnesses today more or less accurate than information obtained from child witnesses in the early 1990s?

Are interviewers of children required to avoid asking yes/no questions?

What is the best way to obtain the most accurate information from children?

Please give me examples of the sorts of questions that a typical child interview would contain.

Yours faithfully,
Ross Francis

Hello Raewyn,

My November 15, 2016 request is here:

https://fyi.org.nz/request/4952-child-wi...

Police initially responded to it, so I have no idea what you mean when you say police didn't receive it. Clearly, they did.

Ross Francis
