Dear Mr Roundhill,

I refer to your Official Information Act request of 29 September 2016 for
information about Indian students facing deportation.

An administrative oversight meant that the reply to your request was
delayed and for that I apologise.

1. Of the Indian students currently facing deportation, how many have been
convicted of a crime in New Zealand? This information in not held by
Police. Police has discussed this part of your request with both the
Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and
Employment. Both agencies advise that they do not hold the information in
the form you have requested. Therefore this part of your request is
declined pursuant to section 18(e) of the Official Information Act 1982 as
the information cannot be made available without substantial collation or
research.

2. Of the Indian students currently facing deportation, how many have you
dealt with professionally in your capacity as a police officer? I have not
dealt with any students facing deportation at the moment. I have dealt
with a large number of students throughout my policing career and time in
NZ. My experiences with students is one of the reasons following numerous
consultations that I have led the establishment of an interagency
International Students Programme in 2016 looking at ways of mitigating
both risks to NZ and to the students themselves. This is through education
of our NZ laws, road rules and support services should they require.

3. What advice have you received in relation to the Indian students
currently facing deportation? No advice received.

4. What advice have you supplied, outside of the Radio New Zealand
interview, in relation to the Indian students currently facing
deportation? No advice specifically for Indian students facing
deportation.

5. On what did you base the information you supplied to Radio New Zealand?
My years of experience as an Indian immigrant to NZ, an award winning
police Sergeant of 10 years’ service, and as the Police Ethnic Advisor to
the largest Ethnic community in NZ. Through our already established
District and Area Advisory Boards as well as relationships and
partnerships with various managements, associations, clubs and committees.

You have the right, under section 28(3) of the Official Information Act
1982, to ask the Ombudsman to review my decision if you are not satisfied
with the way I have responded to your request.

Yours sincerely,
