Hi KiwiRail,

 

I am writing in light of recent news that members of the DFT class are
being reinstated/overhauled and that some will be receiving Brightstar. I
appreciate that some aspects may not be finalized, however, there is
currently confusion over the current intentions so it would be great if
this were clarified. If possible, I request:

 

- Clarification to which locomotives on the below list will be reinstated
or kept out of service at this point in time

- If being reinstated/overhauled, I request clarification on which
locomotives on the list will/will not be fitted with Brightstar.

 

The locomotives in question are:

- 7023

- 7049

- 7064

- 7077

- 7104

- 7117

- 7199

- 7282

- 7322

- 7335

Dear Mr Xu

 

We are writing in response to your Official Information Act 1982 request
dated 18 July 2016 requesting information on the status of DFT
Locomotives.  Your questions and KiwiRail’s response are outlined below:

 

“- Clarification to which locomotives on the below list will be reinstated
or kept out of service at this point in time

- If being reinstated/overhauled, I request clarification on which
locomotives on the list will/will not be fitted with Brightstar.

 

The locomotives in question are:

-          7023

-          7049

-          7064

-          7077

-          7104

-          7117

-          7199

-          7282

-          7322“

 

At present, three DFT locomotives are scheduled for repairs and
reinstatement.  The DFT 7104 will return to service in its original
configuration, after heavy repair work is completed, but will not be
fitted with Brightstar.  The DFT 7282 and DFT 7322 have been selected for
rebuild to a DFB class locomotive with Brightstar and work has begun to
strip 7282.

 

In the 2016/2017 financial year, a further three DFTs will be taken out of
service and rebuilt as DFB locomotives.  At present, no decision has been
made to extend the program beyond this.

 

KiwiRail has yet to confirm which of the three DFT locomotives will be
rebuilt as DFB locomotives from the list below, or if Brightstar will be
fitted:

 

-          7023

-          7049

-          7064

-          7077

-          7117

-          7199

 

Under s28(3) of the Act, you have the right to seek an investigation and
review of this decision by way of complaint to the Ombudsman.  Refer to
