From: Max
Dear Victoria University of Wellington,
I am writing to request information under the Official Information Act 1982.
Please provide the number of students and the grade distribution for all trimester 3 courses offering in 2023/2024/2025 (Nov 2023 to Feb 2024, Nov 2024 to Feb 2025)?
Yours faithfully,
Max

Victoria University of Wellington
Kia ora Max
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request of 26
September 2025, in which you requested:
“Please provide the number of students and the grade distribution for all
trimester 3 courses offering in 2023/2024/2025 (Nov 2023 to Feb 2024, Nov
2024 to Feb 2025)?”
Your request as currently framed would require substantial collation
and/or research to respond. There are more 1,900 courses that the
University offers. To collate all information requested would create
significant and unreasonable impact on the University's ability to carry
out its other operations. Accordingly, your request is likely to be
refused under section 18(f) of the OIA.
Additionally, as post-graduate courses typically have low numbers of
students, there are significant risks of the information identifying
personal information about individuals, which would need to be withheld
under section 9(2)(a) of the OIA.
In order to assist us in preparing a response, can you please confirm
whether you are happy to amend your request to be limited to around 20
courses of your choosing, and specify if you want a full breakdown of the
grades for each or aggregated data to avoid risks to individual privacy.
If there is any additional information you can provide that can assist us
to narrow the scope of your request, please let us know. We note you have
made a number of requests of this nature, so if you wish to contact us
directly to discuss if there are other ways we can support you with your
continued requests you are welcome to contact us directly at
[1][VUW request email] so we can assist.
Please reply with confirmation of the above by Wednesday 8 October 2025.
If we do not hear back from you in this time, we will proceed with your
original request.
Please note, any clarification or amendment of a request is considered to
be a new request for the purpose of calculating the maximum statutory
timeframe for response—see section 15(1AA) of the Official Information
Act.

Kia ora Kayana,
Thank you for your reply. I’m happy to amend my request to limit it to the following courses, only if they were offered in Trimester 3 (Summer) in T3 2023–24 and T3 2024–25:
HIST329, PHIL325, RELI312, CLAS311, BIOL219, FHSS201, HIST235, EDUC211, CLAS211, PHIL209, RELI226, SACS201.
For each course in each period, please provide a full grade-distribution breakdown—i.e., the number of students who received each final grade for that paper (e.g., “COMP102: 1 A+, 2 A, 3 A−, …”). An Excel (.xlsx) spreadsheet would be appreciated. If a listed course wasn’t offered in a given period, please note that.
Ngā mihi,
Max Wong
