Auckland Council
Dear Jarvis,
Thank you for your enquiry.
I’ve consulted with the Land Use Research and Evaluation team regarding
your request. Based on our discussions, we do not believe Auckland Council
is able to provide an answer to the question as currently framed.
To the best of our knowledge, Auckland Council does not hold information
on whether a dwelling or property is ‘unoccupied’—either permanently or
temporarily. This is not something the Council actively monitors or
records. While rare instances of property abandonment may come to our
attention, this typically occurs through indirect indicators such as
complaints from neighbours (e.g. overgrowth, pest issues) or unpaid rates
due to unresolved estates. These scenarios may be relevant to specific
teams, such as the Rates team, but are not systematically tracked or
flagged under a defined ‘abandoned’ status.
It’s also worth noting that Council may not have a standard definition or
keyword for ‘abandoned’ properties within our databases, which limits our
ability to search or report on such cases.
However, the attached report might be helpful to you as it provides a
summary of dwellings and households in Auckland based on data from the
2023 New Zealand Census of Population and Dwellings. The 2023 Census
provides a snapshot of New Zealand on census day (7 March 2023). This
report presents an overview of key findings, and outlines changes over
time since the 2018 Census, and, where possible, the 2013 Census. Local
board area comparisons are provided, where noteworthy.
Please let me know if you have any other questions or if I can assist
further.
Kind regards,
Fernanda Maciel
