Dear Ash,

I refer to your request of 2 August 2025. I apologise for the delay in the
University’s response. The University’s response follows.

You requested the following information for summer research scholarships
for 2023/2024 and 2024/2025.

“How many research projects were available?”

There is a central allocation of 276 Summer Research Scholarships for
2023/2024 and 2024/2025. This figure does not include external faculty
funded scholarships/projects that are also available through this scheme.
Note that this figure is the number of scholarships/projects available,
not the maximum number of students who may be awarded Summer Research
Scholarships (some scholarships/projects may have more than one student
working on them).

“How many applicants were there?”, “how many applications were
successful?”
For 2023/2024, there were 1218 applicants, of whom 355 were successful.
For 2024/2025, there were 1400 applicants, of whom 372 were successful.
The figures provided for number of successful applicants includes both
successful applicants for the 276 centrally allocated Summer Research
Scholarships and the external faculty funded scholarships.
“Highest GPA of a successful applicant, Lowest gpa of a successful non
Maori applicant, Median/Mean (whatever is available) of a successful
applicant, Highest gpa of an unsuccessful applicant”
The University does not hold these statistics and cannot readily create
them by generating reports from our systems. This part of your request is
refused under section 18(g) of the OIA.
You have the right to make a complaint to an Ombudsman if you are
dissatisfied with the University’s response.
Yours sincerely,
Landon Watt
