Information on fixed-site ocean temperature data (sampling < 3h) within Auckland region
RC made this Official Information request to Auckland Council
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for RC to read a recent response and update the status.
From: RC
Dear Auckland Council,
I am a Master of Science student in Marine Science. I am seeking information on whether Auckland Council holds any water temperature data collected by sensors fixed in place (for example, moorings, buoys, seafloor instruments, wharf sensors, or ship-berth loggers) within New Zealand’s Exclusive Economic Zone, particularly within the Auckland region.
If such datasets exist, please advise:
• The sampling frequency or interval between measurements (e.g., minutes or hours);
• The geographic location(s) or area(s) where the sensors are deployed.
I am not requesting copies of the data themselves; I simply wish to know whether the data exist and, if so, the sampling rate and geographic coverage, along with any available metadata.
Yours faithfully,
Logan

Hi Logan,
Thanks for reaching out. We have a handful of sites which record marine
water temperature around Auckland’s estuaries which you may find helpful.
These sensors record both water and sediment surface temperature. I’ve
attached a list of the sites and their metadata.
Other than, that we don’t record continuous marine water temperature at
any site. We do record discrete water temperature as part of out saline
water quality monitoring programme. However, these are only ~monthly
recordings.
I’ve got a few links which you may find helpful:
[1]Seascope – Provides real time marine data including temperature across
NZ.
[2]Auckland Council Coastal Monitoring Portal – Recently released by our
coastal monitoring team, this portal contains data from our wave buoys and
tide gauges, as well as beach surveys and live cameras. No temperature
data however.
[3]Water Quality and River Ecology Data Explorer – Our water quality
team’s data explorer, which contains discrete coastal water quality and
temperature data.
If you have any other questions or data requests, feel free to email us
directly at [4][email address].
Kind regards,
Jack
