Information on fixed-site ocean temperature data (sampling < 3h) within Northland region

RC made this Official Information request to Northland Regional Council

The request was successful.

From: RC

Dear Northland Regional Council,

I am a Master of Science student in Marine Science. I am seeking information on whether Northland Regional Council holds any water temperature data collected by sensors fixed in place (for example, moorings, buoys, seafloor instruments, wharf sensors, or ship-berth loggers) within New Zealand’s Exclusive Economic Zone, particularly within the Northland region.

If such datasets exist, please advise:

• The sampling frequency or interval between measurements (e.g., minutes or hours);
• The geographic location(s) or area(s) where the sensors are deployed.

I am not requesting copies of the data themselves; I simply wish to know whether the data exist and, if so, the sampling rate and geographic coverage, along with any available metadata.

Yours faithfully,

Logan

Good afternoon.

Just to clarify, I assume you are interested in coastal environment only.

Request Details: water temperature data collected by sensors fixed in
place (for example, moorings, buoys, seafloor instruments, wharf sensors,
or ship-berth loggers) within New Zealand’s Exclusive Economic Zone,
particularly within the Northland region. The sampling frequency or
interval between measurements (e.g., minutes or hours); • The geographic
location(s) or area(s) where the sensors are deployed. I am not requesting
copies of the data themselves; I simply wish to know whether the data
exist and, if so, the sampling rate and geographic coverage, along with
any available metadata.

We collect temperature as part of our discrete sampling programmes but for
fixed continuous data collection, NRC has 3 coastal buoys that are
deployed for ~1month every quarter.  These collect water quality data,
including temperature, every 15 minutes.

The locations are (NZTM):

1702785 6110635

1698140 6096275

1719853 6045933

We did run a permanent station at Tikinui wharf for a roughly 5 years,
ceasing 2022 from memory.  Again 15-minute frequency.

1687983 6001922

Other organisations may be collecting temperature data – eg. I believe
NIWA collects continuous temperature data at their Ruakaka facility, but
you’d need to ask them directly.

Ngâ mihi
