This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Lloyd Davies to read recent responses and update the status.

From: Lloyd Davies

Dear KiwiRail,

I am seeking all information related to any track or formation works undertaken inside the Wairarapa line tunnels after the completion of the block of line works in February 2025. Information should include detailed description of all work undertaken, reasons for the work not being done during the block of line works, costs associated with this work, and what further work is required.

Yours faithfully,

Lloyd Davies

Good afternoon Lloyd

Please find our response below.
Please note we have taken your query to mean the work completed at Easter, and any further work.

At Easter we undertook tamping work, after the track had time to go through its consolidation (i.e. the passage of trains causes some minor settlement so we go back to put the track to the design level).
The work could not be done during the block of line at Christmas because there was not enough time to achieve consolidation (i.e. we did run fully loaded trains to get through the critical settlement, but more was needed and there was not enough time to achieve this).
The total cost for the work at easter including both KiwiRail and contracted resources was approx. $270k. This allowed the track speed to be increased from 60kph to 90kph.

We will be going into the tunnel 26-27th July and 16-17th Aug to re-spread some of the ballast in the tunnel where the tamping activity did not use as much as expected.
This will improve the walking surface for our people when they undertake inspections or other work over the coming years. The cost if this work is estimated to be approx. $140k.

We trust this answers your queries.

Kind regards

Dave
