Track activity on the Shands Spur, Hornby, Christchurch
David Palmer made this Official Information request to KiwiRail
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for David Palmer to read recent responses and update the status.
From: David Palmer
Dear KiwiRail, I have some questions about your operations in Hornby and Greater Christchurch.
1. How many train movements occurred on the Shands Rd/Hornby branch spur in the last 12 months?
2.What were the general purposes of any track movements? (eg testing, maintenance, deliveries, pickups, etc)
3.How many Kiwirail customers are currently receiving rail services on this line?
4. What was the purpose of the short track extension recently made at the southern tip of this line, close to Christchurch Southern Motorway?
5. What was the cost of the short track extension?
6. What plans, if any, does Kiwirail have for this area of land?
7. Does Kiwirail have any plans for further extensions of this line?
8. Thinking more generally about train movements within Christchurch City, is it true that signalling limitations mean that only one can train can operate at a time on the Main Line between Pound Road/Hornby, the Christchurch Railway Station, and Factory Road/Belfast?
Ngā mihi,
David Palmer

KiwiRail
Good evening David
Please find our reply below.
1. How many train movements occurred on the Shands Rd/Hornby branch spur in the last 12 months?
There have been no freight over other revenue generating train movements on the Hornby Br. Line within the last 12 months.
We are aware there will have been internal movements on this line - e.g. for the purposes of track testing, wagon storage and driver training, however we have not kept records of the precise number of these movements.
2. What were the general purposes of any track movements? (eg testing, maintenance, deliveries, pickups, etc)
Please see above.
3.How many Kiwirail customers are currently receiving rail services on this line?
Currently none.
4. What was the purpose of the short track extension recently made at the southern tip of this line, close to Christchurch Southern Motorway?
As part of the motorway build there was a requirement to remove a straight section of track which was where the motorway is now. This track extension was the agreed replacement for the removed section.
5. What was the cost of the short track extension?
Approx. $910,000
6. What plans, if any, does Kiwirail have for this area of land?
7. Does Kiwirail have any plans for further extensions of this line?
No current plans, but KiwiRail is always open to discussing & investigating (new) opportunities for rail freight movements & volumes on our network.
8. Thinking more generally about train movements within Christchurch City, is it true that signalling limitations mean that only one can train can operate at a time on the Main Line between Pound Road/Hornby, the Christchurch Railway Station, and Factory Road/Belfast?
No, there is the capacity on the network to operate more than one service (where there is double tracking, passing loops etc).
However operational efficiencies do not require this at this time.
Please feel free to get in touch with any further questions.
Kind regards
Dave
