We are aware of Corrections responses to your previous requests for this
information. As noted in the response letter, Corrections have balanced
the public interest with the interest of maintaining the effective conduct
of public affairs:

 

In accordance with section 9(1) of the OIA, we have also considered
whether there are countervailing public interest considerations favouring
the release of the remainder of the requested information. While it is in
the public interest that people who have concerns about how the justice
sector operates and the people who are involved in it can raise their
concerns, this needs to be balanced against the effective administration
of prisons and to ensure that staff are able to carry out their duties.
Therefore, in this instance, Corrections has balanced the public interest
of transparency and accountability by providing positions and staff names,
while withholding contacting details.

There are multiple avenues for the public to raise concerns/issues about
how people in prison are managed and these avenues have been provided in
our response to you:

Members of the public can also lodge complaints via the Corrections
website – [2]Complaint resolution and directly to the Office of the
Inspectorate via their website – [3]Making a complaint. Furthermore, a
prisoner’s legal counsel is able to contact each prison to organise legal

Dear Department Of Corrections,

 

Thank you for partly supplying the information I had recently requested.

 

Unfortunately your response is very disheartening. Each year I request
Prison Management Contact Details personally. As an advocate for many and
for many members of this community advocating for the many whom serve
sentences in New Zealand, it is crucial such people have contact
information for relevant government roles that are responsible for people
serving sentences. It is such people’s roles and responsibilities to care
and support those serving inmates. Therefore I again request under the
Official Information Act 1982, contact details for all roles previously
requested. This includes, email and direct dial phone numbers for each of
those individual role persons. This information has been released to me
for the past 3-5 years, please continue you do so.
