Current Status on DC/DFT Locomotives

Finn Harris made this Official Information request to KiwiRail

The request was successful.

From: Finn Harris

Dear KiwiRail,
I have made this request on the basis to find out information on the current status of the DFT and DC class locomotive fleets. I was wondering which locomotives of the fleet have been withdrawn in 2015, which ones are planned to be withdrawn this year or potentially next year (if possible), and if there are any more than are scheduled to be repainted in the KiwiRail livery.

Thanks in advance,
Finn Harris

Good morning Finn

Thank you for your enquiry on the current status of the DFT and DC class locomotive fleets.

Following the introduction of electric trains on the Auckland metro network the Auckland Transport (AT) leased diesel locomotives are now being returned to KiwiRail. The returned DFT and DFB locomotives (from AT) are being integrated into the freight and Greater Wellington Regional Council businesses. We will shortly assess the condition of those returned and compare them with those running freight duty. Once this is complete we will decide which locomotives to retire.

While there are no immediate plans to retire the DFT/DFB fleets the five remaining DBR will be retired this year, and we expect several DC will be retired by 30 June 2016.

In terms of repaints, these occur when any locomotive has a capital overhaul. Therefore, any DSG, DFB or DXC programmed for or undergoing overhaul between now and the end of FY16 will be painted in the KiwiRail livery.

Attached for your reference is the list of the current DC/DFT/DFB fleet and the 12x DC locomotives that were sold in FY15.

We trust this helps answer your query.

Under s28(3) of the Act, you have the right to seek an investigation and review of this response by way of complaint to an Ombudsman. Refer to www.ombudsmen.govt.nz for more information.

Kind regards
Louise
