Law Graduates' GPAs 2020-2024
Amanda Cohen made this Official Information request to University of Auckland
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Amanda Cohen to read a recent response and update the status.
From: Amanda Cohen
Dear University of Auckland,
1) Can you please provide the LLB GPAs of the top graduating student each year in the years 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024. These will be the recipients of the Auckland District Law Society Prize or the Law Association Prize. To protect the confidentiality of students, the provision of these GPAs do not need to be linked to a given year (e.g. if the 2020 highest GPA was 8, this needs merely to be identified as '8' rather than '2020: 8'). For my purposes, a 0.25 range of values (e.g. 8.0-8.25) would also be acceptable (but not preferred), in the same way as was provided in the previous request:
https://fyi.org.nz/request/16227-law-gra...
(I note, of course, that: "A decision to create statistics in response to an OIA request on one occasion does not require the University to create the same or similar statistics if they are requested subsequently." That is not my intention. I merely intend to provide an example of an acceptable format of the response.)
2) Can you please also provide the LLB GPAs of the student with the lowest GPA who received the Law Senior Scholar Prize each year in the years 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024?
3) Can you please also provide the LLB GPAs of the student with the lowest GPA who received the Dean's Academic Excellence Award each year in the years 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024?
In respect of these three requests, I have two clarifications. First, as these students have received awards, and the University holds GPA information on a per student basis, this information will be held by the University of Auckland. Second, I have constructed these requests so ensure that the University of Auckland will not be required to "create statistics", since all that is being requested is the GPA value or range of GPA values (without requiring a "mean" or "median" calculation).
Yours faithfully,
AC

Dear Amanda,
I refer to your request of 18 July 2024. The University’s response
follows.
“1) Can you please provide the LLB GPAs of the top graduating student each
year in the years 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024. These will be the
recipients of the Auckland District Law Society Prize or the Law
Association Prize.”
The information requested about the LLB GPA of the student who received
the Auckland District Law Society Prize or the Law Association Prize for
2020-2024 is refused under section 9(2)(a) of the OIA, to protect the
privacy of those persons
“2) Can you please also provide the LLB GPAs of the student with the
lowest GPA who received the Law Senior Scholar Prize each year in the
years 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024?
3) Can you please also provide the LLB GPAs of the student with the lowest
GPA who received the Dean's Academic Excellence Award each year in the
years 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024?”
The statistics requested are not held by the University and cannot be
generated through an existing report. Staff would manually need to review
files for each individual recipient for each of the specified years,
determine which of them has the lowest GPA for that year, and record that
information to create the requested statistics. Your request is refused
under section 18(g) of the OIA.
You have the right to make a complaint to an Ombudsman if you are
dissatisfied with the University’s response.
Yours sincerely,
Landon Watt
