Dear University of Auckland,
I am writing to request information regarding the University of Auckland Year 3 and Year 4, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) objective structured clinical examination (OSCE).
(1) The number of students, by the ethnicity ‘Asian’, who failed the End of Year 3 OSCE for the years 2023, 2022 and 2021.
(2) The number of students, by the ethnicity ‘European’, who failed the End of Year 3 OSCE for the years 2023, 2022 and 2021.
(3) The number of students, by the ethnicity ‘Asian’, who failed the End of Year 4 OSCE for the years 2023, 2022 and 2021.
(4) The number of students, by the ethnicity ‘European’, who failed the End of Year 4 OSCE for the years 2023, 2022 and 2021.
(5) Please provide any information regarding protocols implemented by the School of Medicine to mitigate potential racism, bias, and discrimination from simulated actors (acting as patients) and examiners.
(6) Has the School of Medicine explored the possibility of recording both video and/or associated audio components during candidates' Year 3 and Year 4 OSCE?

Dear Matthew,
I refer to your request of 14 June 2024. As consultations necessary to make a decision on your request are such that a response cannot reasonably be given within the original time limit, the University has extended the time limit for your request under section 15A(1)(b) of the OIA. The new maximum time limit for the University’s response is 12 August 2024; we will respond to your request as soon as reasonably practicable. You have the right to make a complaint to an Ombudsman if you are dissatisfied with this extension.

Dear Matthew,
I refer to your request of 14 June 2024. The University’s response
follows:
“I am writing to request information regarding the University of Auckland
Year 3 and Year 4, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB)

The requested statistics are not held by the University. This constitutes
a refusal of your request under section 18(g) of the OIA.

The School of Medicine relies on the professionalism and integrity of the
examiners and actors when grading students. The University is committed to
being safe, inclusive and equitable. Diversity and collegiality are
central to the University’s values. In accordance with these values, the
University is committed to providing an environment in which all members
of the University community are valued and treated with respect, and where
bullying, harassment and discrimination are known to be unacceptable. The
University regards any incident of harassment, bullying or discrimination
as a serious matter and will thoroughly address all formal and informal
complaints to ensure the preservation of a safe work and study

“(6) Has the School of Medicine explored the possibility of recording both

Year 4 OSCE?”
This would be a matter for the School of Medicine’s Phase 1 and 2
Curriculum committees. The possibility of recording video and/or audio
components of candidates’ Year 3 and Year 4 OSCE has not been on the
agenda for these committees in 2024.
You have the right to make a complaint to an Ombudsman if you are
dissatisfied with this response.
