Dear John,

I refer to your email of 15 July 2022, in which you requested official
information concerning MBChB students.

Unfortunately, consultations necessary to make a decision on your request
are such that a response cannot reasonably be given within the original
time limit, the University has extended the time limit for your request
until 26 August 2022 under section 15A(1)(b) of the OIA. This is the new
maximum time limit for the University’s response; we will respond to your
requests as soon as reasonably practicable. You have the right to make a
complaint an Ombudsman if you are dissatisfied with this extension.

Yours sincerely,

Landon Watt

University of Auckland

Dear John,

I refer to your request of 15 July 2022. The University’s response
follows. Note that the ethnicity data provided is based on self-reported
ethnicity.

“(1) The number of students, by the ethnicity ‘Asian’, who were admitted
into MBChB Part II in the year 2016 (Class of 2020 which plan to
graduate in 2020).”

102.

“(3) The number of students, by the ethnicity ‘Asian’, who were admitted
into MBChB Part II in the year 2017 (Class of 2021 which plan to
graduate in 2021).”
106.

“(2) The number of students, by the ethnicity ‘Asian’, who graduated
with an MBChB degree in the year 2020.”
“(4) The number of students, by the ethnicity ‘Asian’, who graduated
with an MBChB degree in the year 2021.”

The University’s systems cannot provide the requested reports for
graduations in a specific year for a custom cohort. Neither charging,
extending the time limit for the response, nor consulting with you would
change this. Our systems can, however, provide the requested figures for
degree completions:

 1. 77 of the 102 students with the ethnicity ‘Asian’ admitted to the
MBChB Part II in 2016 had completed the MBChB degree within five
years (i.e. normal academic time).
 2. 89 of the 106 students with the ethnicity ‘Asian’ admitted to the
MBChB Part II in 2017 had completed the MBChB degree within five
years (i.e. normal academic time).

The University’s School of Medicine has provided a brief statement below
concerning reasons why MBChB students admitted in a particular year may
not all graduate from the MBChB degree in the same year:

“Whilst it is expected that students will complete the MBChB degree in
the shortest possible time, some students do opt to take additional time
to do so, for reasons which range from a decision to complete an
intercalated degree e.g. BMedSc(Hons), health concerns, or personal
reasons. The COVID pandemic may also have led to interruptions to or
deferrals from study for some students. A small number of students may
also exit the programme without a degree; again this is for a variety of
reasons.”

The University has refused part of your request under section 18(f) of
the OIA. You have the right to make a complaint to an Ombudsman if you
are dissatisfied with this response.

Yours sincerely,

Rebecca Ewert
