Dear Richard,

I refer to your request of 11 March 2024. The University’s response
follows.

“I would like the university to send information regarding the University
of Auckland MBChB Graduate Entry - International Student Scholarship from
the years 2017 - 2023 (Inclusive). Specifically, I am seeking the
following information:

[1] The total number of scholarships awarded in that year.”

Year Number awarded/paid
2023 1
2022 2
2021 4
2020 4
2019 3
2018 2

This scholarship was established in 2017; 2018 was the first year the
scholarship was awarded.

“[2] The median GPE of students who were awarded the scholarship in that
year.
[3] The lowest GPE of any individual who was awarded the scholarship in
that year.”

Due to the low number of students who are awarded this scholarship, it is
necessary to withhold the information requested about their GPEs to
protect their privacy under section 9(2)(a) of the OIA.

“[4] Any notes taken by any staff member of the university that relate to
how an applicant's country of origin may influence their eligibility for
the scholarship (In relation to part 5 of the regulations of the
scholarship)”

“[5] Any notes taken by any staff member of the university in relation to
the University’s strategic aims in the context of part 5 of the
regulations of the scholarship.”

The University does not hold the information requested. This part of your
request is refused under section 18(g) of the OIA. To clarify:

 1. This part of r 5, "The country of origin of the candidate may be
considered by the selection committee to align with the University’s
strategic aims”, relates to selection from eligible applicants – it
does not relate to determination of eligibility.
 2. This part of r 5 is not functional unless the University sets relevant
strategic aims.
 3. There are no strategic aims that prioritise specific countries for r 5
of these scholarship regulations.

The Scholarships Office will look at clarifying this part of the
regulations for the University of Auckland MBChB Graduate Entry -
International Student Scholarship when they are next reviewed.

You have the right to make a complaint to an Ombudsman if you are
dissatisfied with this response.

Yours sincerely,
