St James Theatre

Luke made this Official Information request to Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga

Response to this request is long overdue. By law Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga should have responded by now (details and exceptions). The requester can complain to the Ombudsman.

From: Luke

Dear Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga,

Has HeritageNZ ever reviewed St James Theatre (central Auckland) to determine whether it is suitable to remain on its Heritage List?

Why does it remain on the List? St James Theatre is in a state of disrepair, which has been repeatedly vandalised, subject to squatting, and its owners (and the Council) have no means to restore the building in the short or medium term.

Yours faithfully,

Luke

Kia ora Luke

Thank you for your FYI request dated 6 July 2023 regarding St James
Theatre (central Auckland).

The New Zealand Heritage List/Rārangi Kōrero (the List) recognises the
heritage significance of a place, assessed against a national standard.
Listing gives owners access to support from our expert staff, and our
guidance can help achieve repairs and alterations that balance a place’s
heritage features with modern needs. A property being listed also supports
applications for funding, including for New Zealand Lotteries Board
grants. The FAQs page on our website has more information about the List
and can be accessed here: [1]https://www.heritage.org.nz/.

Places on the New Zealand Heritage List/Rārangi Kōrero can be reviewed for
several reasons. Reviews must take place at least three years after the
place was first entered on the List or was last reviewed. To date, the St
James Theatre in Auckland has not been reviewed.

If you have any further questions of believe there is any further
information which you may require, please feel free to contact me at
[2][email address].

You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of
this decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at
[3]www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.

Ngā mihi

William
