List of entries on heritage list that have been removed

James Sullivan made this Official Information request to Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga

The request was successful.

From: James Sullivan

Dear Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga,

Are you able to provide a list of all known entries on on heritage list that have been removed? I am unable to find such information on your site.

Ideally the resulting list would include for each entry, if it was removed due to section 78 or section 79 of the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014.

A csv or json format would be preferred but a spreadsheet format would be acceptable.

Kindest regards,
James Sullivan

Kia ora Mr Sullivan

Thank you for your FYI request of 17 August 2023, requesting “a list of
all known entries on on heritage list that have been removed”. Thank you
for specifying that you would like to know for each entry whether it was
removed due to section 78 or section 79 of the Heritage New Zealand
Pouhere Taonga Act 2014 (‘the Act”).

Please find attached a csv file containing all entries removed from the
heritage list due to sections 78 or 79 of the Act. Please note that at
this stage we have interpreted your request as being only for these
entries, as your request refers to our present act. However, I note that
we do hold information relating to entries removed from the list under
previous legislation which can be provided upon request.

I also note that listing numbers 5636-45, 5664-6, and 5704 were listed as
archaeological sites, and thus have no street address attributed to them.

If you have any further questions of believe there is any further
information which you may require, please feel free to contact me at
[1][email address].

You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of

Hi William,

Thank you very much for that list. That's exactly the sort of information I was after.

It would be great to have the items removed pre 2014 even if they don't have reasons that match up with current legislation or any reason recorded. Just to get a full understanding of how many things have been removed from the list compared to it's full length.

Kindest regards,
James Sullivan

Marked it as partially complete as it would be great to have all the items that have been removed. Hardly critical but still would be great to have.

The data provided so far is exactly the sort of stuff I was looking for so big thumbs up for the quick response. :)

Kia ora Mr Sullivan

Thank you for your extended OIA request 2023 which Heritage New Zealand
Pouhere Taonga (HNZPT) received on 28 August 2023.
You requested an additional list of all known entries on HNZPT's heritage
list including entries that have been removed pre-2014. You originally
specified you would like to know for each entry whether it was removed due
to section 78 or section 79 of the HNZPT Act 2014 (‘the Act”).

Attached is a list of everything ‘removed’ from what is now known as the
New Zealand Heritage List/Rārangi Kōrero ‘the List’.

Entries can be removed from the List for a variety of reasons. The ‘Status
Explanation’ column captures some of this information only.

Here are the key reasons for removal:

•       Some entries have been removed from the list due to demolition or
destruction. For instance, many unfortunately needed to be removed
following the Christchurch earthquakes due to the damage they sustained.
•       Some entries get merged into larger entries over time, resulting
in the constituent parts being 'removed'.
•       Some entries on the list were ‘removed’ as they did not meet the
transitional provisions of the Historic Places Act 1993 (HPA 1993).

The HPA 1993 replaced the Historic Places Act 1980 and introduced the
Register (now the List). The transitional provisions of the HPA 1993
required the New Zealand Historic Places Trust (now HNZPT) to confirm the
places on the Register with the owners within 12 months of the
commencement of the HPA 1993 [s.114 (6a).]  If the New Zealand Historic
Places Trust did not do this, the places were ‘declassified’.

information which you may require, please feel free to contact me at
