Name change of government departments total spend
Charlotte made this Official Information request to The Treasury
The request was partially successful.
From: Charlotte
Dear The Treasury,
Question number 1.
Please can you tell me the total amount that it has cost to change the name of every government department from english to maori language. Example ministry of health - te whata ora.
please include all spending for consultation fees during the name change process and how much it cost to change signange on buildings, changes to websites and forms etc.
No breakdown is necessary - just the total figure.
Question number 2.
Please can you advise whether there was any public consultation in the decision making to change all these names or whether this was just decided by the government?
thanks
Yours faithfully,
Charlotte

Dear Ministerial Services Inbox [TSY],
Hi, please can you pass this request on to another department within the government who can accurately answer my question. My question was for all government departments which have changed their name from english language to maori language. not just the treasury cost.
Please include the likes of the ministry of education, the ministry of justice, housing new zealand, ministry of health (every single department which is paid for by NZ tax payers) which has had their name changed (without public consultation)
Yours sincerely,
Charlotte

The response from the Treasury violates the Official Information Act 1982. They have to transfer the request, you do not have to submit it to multiple agencies. They needed to do this within 10 days of receiving your request.
The important part of Section 14: "the department ... to which the request is made shall promptly ... transfer the request, or relevant part of the request, to the other department ..., and inform the person making the request accordingly."
https://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/publ...
Section 14:
Transfer of requests
Where—
(a)
a request in accordance with section 12 is made to a department or interdepartmental venture or Minister of the Crown or organisation; and
(b)
the information, or some of the information, to which the request relates—
(i)
is not held by the department or venture or Minister of the Crown or organisation but is believed by the person dealing with the request to be held by another department (for itself and for a departmental agency hosted by it or an interdepartmental executive board serviced by it) or interdepartmental venture or Minister of the Crown or organisation, or by a local authority; or
(ii)
is believed by the person dealing with the request to be more closely connected with the functions of another department (for itself and for a departmental agency hosted by it or an interdepartmental executive board serviced by it) or interdepartmental venture or Minister of the Crown or organisation, or of a local authority,—
the department or venture or Minister of the Crown or organisation to which the request is made shall promptly, and in any case not later than 10 working days after the day on which the request is received, transfer the request, or relevant part of the request, to the other department or interdepartmental venture or Minister of the Crown or organisation, or to that local authority, and inform the person making the request accordingly.
