Cyclone Gabriele and Communications resilience

Mike Hunua made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police

The request was successful.

From: Mike Hunua

Dear New Zealand Police,

Could the Police advise what issues with communications with the frontline staff they had in the Hawks Bay and Gisborne regions relating to radio and cellular communications?

What damage occurred to a police communication infrastructure (if any)?

Are there any further reliance plans around emergency communications for public safety and extreme weather events?

Has Cyclone Gabriele changed the Public safety network LMR and Hourua priority cellular service plans as a result of learnings and reliance on communication during cyclone Gabriele?

Are the NZ Police still the lead agency for the Next Generation Communications Network?

Yours faithfully,

Mike Hunua

Dear Mike

I refer to your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request, reference
IR-01-23-10152.

The OIA requires that we advise you of our decision on your request no
later than 20 working days after the day we received your request.
Unfortunately, it will not be possible to meet that time limit and we are
therefore writing to notify you of an extension of the time to make our
decision, to 19 May 2023.

This extension is necessary as consultations necessary to make a decision
on your request are such that a proper response cannot reasonably be made
within the original time limit.

You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of
this decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at
[1]www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone

0800 802 602.

Ngā mihi,
