NZLR Prize 2021-2023

W Donald made this Official Information request to University of Auckland

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for W Donald to read a recent response and update the status.

From: W Donald

Dear University of Auckland,

The purpose of this request is to enable those eligible for the New Zealand Law Review prize to verify the integrity of the selection process. Please provide the following information for recipients of the New Zealand Law Review prize awarded in each of the years of 2021, 2022, and 2023 (for students having completed Part-II Law in the years of 2020, 2021, and 2022):

a) the lowest weighted average (used to determine eligibility for the New Zealand Law Review Prize) of the New Zealand Law Review Prize in each year

b) the mean weighted average (used to determine eligibility for the New Zealand Law Review Prize) of recipients of the New Zealand Law Review Prize in each year

If the information cannot be provided as requested above on privacy grounds, in the alternative please report:

c) the single highest of all yearly lowest weighted averages as described in request (a) over the years requested in an alternative to request (a)

d) the mean weighted average of all recipients over the years requested in an alternative for request (b)

Such alternatives would not risk disclosing sensitive data of individual recipients due to the number of years for which information has been requested. I note that a somewhat similar request by F Fitzgerald on 1 March 2022 was partially successful and reported the actual weighted averages of four individuals without the possibility of identifying the individuals due to the three-year range of years reported.

Yours faithfully,

W Donald

Dear W Donald,

I refer to your request of 28 March 2023. The New Zealand Law Review Prize
regulations stipulate that three Prizes are awarded annually. Your
requests for the information about the grades/marks of the recipients  are
refused under section 9(2)(a) of the Official Information Act, to protect
the privacy of the recipients. Your requests for the University to create
custom statistics for the recipients for the years 2019-2021 are refused
under section 18(e) of the Official Information Act, as the University
does not hold this information and is not required by the Act to create
it. You have the right to make a complaint to an Ombudsman if you are
dissatisfied with this response.

Yours sincerely,
