MBChB Prizes List

Andrew made this Official Information request to University of Auckland

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Andrew to read a recent response and update the status.

From: Andrew

Dear University of Auckland,

I would like to request the names of recipients who were awarded prizes in Year 4 of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) programme, together with the corresponding prize titles, for the years 2023, 2024, and 2025, in the following table format.

For example:
Student A - Australia and New Zealand Society for Geriatric Medicine Prize
Student B - Peter Christie Award
etc.

I note that lists of past MBChB prize recipients (across all years of the MBChB programme) are usually published on the MBChB portal; however, no such lists appear to have been published since 2022.

I also note that, in line with previous Official Information Act requests (for example: https://fyi.org.nz/request/26828-name-of... ), the names of award recipients for other academic programmes have been released without the application of section 9(2)(a) of the Official Information Act 1982.

Yours faithfully,

Andrew

Dear requester,

I refer to your request of 18 December 2025.  The University’s response
follows.

"I would like to request the names of recipients who were awarded prizes
in Year 4 of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB)
programme, together with the corresponding prize titles, for the years
2023, 2024, and 2025, in the following table format.

For example:
Student A - Australia and New Zealand Society for Geriatric Medicine Prize
Student B - Peter Christie Award
etc."

"I note that lists of past MBChB prize recipients (across all years of the
MBChB programme) are usually published on the MBChB portal; however, no
such lists appear to have been published since 2022.’

‘I also note that, in line with previous Official Information Act requests
(for example:
[1]https://fyi.org.nz/request/26828-name-of...),
the names of award recipients for other academic programmes have been
released without the application of section 9(2)(a) of the Official
Information Act 1982.’

I can confirm that a decision was made to cease publishing the names of
these MBChB prize recipients; this is not the result of an administrative
oversight. The University considers each request made under the Official
Information Act individually. As stated in the request you cited for the
Law Award recipient data, the requested information had already been
published by way of a printed notice on the University's campus, and so
that request was for the University to make already published personal
information about our students available in another form.  In contrast,
your request is for the University, in responding to your request through
fyi.org.nz, to publish personal information about students which has not
already been published and which we have made a deliberate decision not to
publish. In these circumstances, the University has decided to refuse your
request under s 9(2)(a) of the Official Information Act, to protect the
privacy of the individual prize recipients.
You have the right to make a complaint to the Ombudsman if you are
dissatisfied with this response.

Yours sincerely,

Landon Watt
