Te Henga Bethells Beach Dog Surveys

P Elliott made this Official Information request to Auckland Council

The request was successful.

From: P Elliott

Dear Auckland Council,

The summer of 2020/21 (from memory), there was a post grad student canvassing dog walkers for an in-person Auckland Council survey, at Te Henga Bethells.
The theme of the survey was about beach access rules for dogs with a strong focus on birds.

More recently, there was an Auckland Council targeted online survey (People’s Panel?). The theme of this was also about local beach dog rules with bird life focus.

Please confirm the purpose, authors and interest groups behind these surveys.

Please provide the results of these surveys and subsequent reports (or other Te Henga dog surveys and reports).

Yours faithfully,
P Elliott

Kia ora,

Thank you for your request for official information, we are happy to
provide this information in a business as usual capacity. As such I’ve
attached the report produced by Unitec students/Auckland Council staff in
2021 as well as a summary of the results from the People’s Panel Survey in
2022.

The research report was funded by the Waitakere Ranges Local Board
(through Waitakere Heritage Area Act funding). The aim was to conduct a
pilot study to assessment of the awareness and behaviour of dog walkers on
Te Henga/Bethell’s Beach as to the Auckland Council (AC) bylaws regulating
the walking of dogs on and off leash and the protection of wildlife on Te
Henga/Bethell’s Beach. It had the following objectives:

o To assess the knowledge of dog walkers on Te Henga/Bethell’s Beach as
to the AC regulations as applied to different physical sections of the
beach in regarding to dogs on leash and dogs off leash.
o To determine the attitude of dog walkers on Te Henga/Bethell’s Beach
in relation to the motivation for their action in relation to dogs
on/off leash and their attitudes to the protection of wildlife on the
beach.
o To determine if survey/advocacy results in any lingering
compliance/change in compliance.
o Promote and raise awareness of AC regulations for dog walking on Te
Henga/Bethell’s beach and birds, particularly NZ dotterel on the
beach.

We did not have Local Board funding for a further survey in the 2022/23
financial year, so to follow this up we used the People’s Panel to ask
similar questions in 2022, over a wider geographic area within the
Waitakere Ranges Heritage Area. The purpose of this was similar i.e. to
find out how we can increase the knowledge and compliance with the dog
bylaws and Increase the knowledge of and appreciation for coastal birds.
We also may use this as a base line to see how any interventions (e.g the
additional Animal Management officer resource deployed to the West Coast
beaches over the 2022/23 summer months) have changed these factors if we
repeat the survey in future years.

If you have any additional questions please feel free to contact me.

Ngâ mihi, Tracey
