Confirmation of what Tazer Model is used by the New Zealand Police and when the tazercam starts recording

H Rogers made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police

The request was successful.

From: H Rogers

Dear New Zealand Police,

I have two questions on the use of Tazers by New Zealand Police.

1. Please will the New Zealand Police confirm which make/model of Tazer is currently in use by officers on duty.

2. At what point does the Tazer being used by the officer start recording video footage of the incident? It this immediately it is drawn from its case or only once the officer puts his finger on the trigger and paints someone or at some other point.

I confirm this request is being made under the Official Information Act 1992.

I confirm I am a New Zealand Citizen resident in New Zealand.

Yours faithfully,

H Rogers

NZ Police's "Use of Force - TASER (Conducted Electrical Weapons)" Police Manual chapter has been released under the OIA and also published on the NZ Police website. You can also find it on policepolicy.nz, an independent repository of NZ Police policy documents: https://policepolicy.nz/policies/use-of-...

In its "Approved devices and accessories" page, its latest version lists the following devices:

"‑ TASER X2, Taser Bolt/Pulse, Taser 7
‑ TASER CAM HD
‑ X2 25' (7.6 metre) smart cartridge for operational use
‑ Taser Bolt/Pulse 4.6 metre air cartridge for operational use
‑ Taser 7 live cartridge, (CQ and SO)."

As far as I can tell, though, this document doesn't contain an answer to your second question. In its "Recording" section, it only says this:

"The TASER must not be utilised in situations where the sole purpose is the gathering of digital video and audio evidence."
