Britain were being given diplomatic status to protect them from the

1) Are any American spies openly operating in New Zealand, at bases like
the Waihopai and Tangimoana spy bases granted diplomatic status as
Sacoolas was?

States representatives in New Zealand. For the purposes of your request,
accredited means “granted diplomatic status.”

 

As per the second part of your request, our response noted that in
accordance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the New
Zealand Government expects all accredited diplomats to respect the laws
and regulations of New Zealand and seeks waivers of diplomatic immunity
when New Zealand law has been breached.
