Flagrant violations of OIA by Police

Mohammed Khan made this Official Information request to Office of the Ombudsman

Response to this request is long overdue. By law Office of the Ombudsman should have responded by now (details and exceptions). You can complain to the Ombudsman.

From: Mohammed Khan

Dear Office of the Ombudsman,

I made a very simple request to New Zealand Police on 28 September of this year, in regards a document they produced that contravenes New Zealand government policy, countless UN resolutions, and basic human dignity. https://fyi.org.nz/request/20686-decisio...

Police requested an extension to 28 November to respond, which would doubtless have been completely unnecessary if they processed OIA requests in good faith.

I received no further correspondence from Police, no requests for further extensions, no request to change the scope of the requests to ease their response, until I contacted them several times. Only on 2 December did a Julian Etchegoin respond to say that Police were refusing to comply with the OIA, and that they would instead engage in a 'internal consultation process', which a reasonable person would understand would have to be covered by their initial deadlines.

Does the Ombudsman not intend to do anything about the systematic violation of the law by the New Zealand Police in regards the Official Information Act, as well as so many other areas?

Yours faithfully,
Mohammed Khan
