Richardson Building Heat and Energy Efficiency

Natasha George made this Official Information request to University of Otago

The request was partially successful.

From: Natasha George

Dear University of Otago,

Staff have made numerous complaints about the installation of window film on the west side of the Richardson Building. The rest of the building has been left untouched

The main complaint is that the film has reduced the natural light and warmth in the offices, which has negatively impacted the physical and mental health and wellbeing of staff affected. Property Services have advised repeatedly that the installation of film on the west facing windows is important to "improve the energy efficiency and temperature regulation of the building and insulation is an important part of that solution", n.b. insulation refers to the window film.

Since the film has been installed all occupants agree that the overhead lights are used much more, and that the heating is turned up much higher and left on to reduce the negative impact of the film on the office environment.

As such, we would like to see the scientifically supported data that confirms the positive sustainability impact of the film on the west facing windows of the Richardson Building.

Yours faithfully,
Natasha George
