Capturing Method of Covid-19 Hospitalisations

John Carey made this Official Information request to Ministry of Health

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for John Carey to read a recent response and update the status.

From: John Carey

Dear Ministry of Health,

Could you please let me know how you are currently capturing the numbers for those people "in hospital" with Covid-19, and/or "hospitalised" with Covid-19?

i.e. Are they captured in the data because they went to hospital to be treated for Covid-19, or are they captured in the data due to being in hospital for any reason within a certain number of days of testing positive for Covid-19? Also, are those who are already in hospital for something else and subsequently test positive for Covid-19, captured in this data?

Yours faithfully,

John Carey

Tçnâ koe John

Thank you for your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (the
Act) to the Ministry of Health (the Ministry) on 23 February 2022 for:

“how you are currently capturing the numbers for those people "in
hospital" with Covid-19, and/or "hospitalised" with Covid-19?

i.e. Are they captured in the data because they went to hospital to be
treated for Covid-19, or are they captured in the data due to being in
hospital for any reason within a certain number of days of testing
positive for Covid-19? Also, are those who are already in hospital for
something else and subsequently test positive for Covid-19, captured in
this data?”

Hospitalisation data captures all patients who have been hospitalised with
COVID-19.  The daily number of people, reported in the media statement, in
hospital with COVID-19 includes every active COVID-19 reported to be in a
hospital (ED & inpatient admissions) at 9am that morning.

Hospitalisations as reported on the case demographics page includes people
reported to the Ministry of Health as requiring hospital level care in the
EpiSurv data base and anyone hospitalised for more than 24 hours in the
Northern region district health boards. There is some lag in this
reporting and there is ongoing work to address this.

As you may be aware, information regarding hospitalisations is available
on the Ministry’s
website: [1]www.health.govt.nz/covid-19-novel-coronavirus/covid-19-data-and-statistics/covid-19-case-demographics.
However, this does not make the distinction of hospitalised ‘with’ or
‘from’ COVID-19. You may wish to contact district health board’s (DHBs)
directly for data with a greater level of detail than is provided on the
Ministry’s website. You can find a list of DHB’s
here: [2]www.health.govt.nz/new-zealand-health-system/key-health-sector-organisations-and-people/district-health-boards/district-health-board-websites.

Under section 28(3) of the Act, you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to
review any decisions made under this request. The Ombudsman may be
contacted by email at: [3][email address] or by calling 0800
802 602.
