Request for Graduating Student GPA distributions

Mr Huang made this Official Information request to University of Auckland

The request was successful.

From: Mr Huang

Dear University of Auckland,

Can you please provide the distributions of the grade point averages (GPA) of graduating students, broken down by degree and major, for each year between 2018 and 2021.

Specifically, I would like to know the number of students who graduate with a GPA in each half-point range (e.g. between 1.01 and 1.50, 1.51 and 2.00, and so on), broken down by degree and major.

Yours faithfully,

Mr Huang

Dear Mr Huang,

I refer to your request of 28 October 2021. The purpose of this email is
to consult with you about your request.

The data which the University systems can provide without substantial
collation or research is based on programme completions, not graduations.
Data for 2021 is not complete, so any data provided for 2021 is not
comparable to the data that would be provided for 2020 and previous years.
Please advise whether you still wish to request the incomplete 2021 data.

The privacy reporting threshold for this data has been set at 7 persons.
Accordingly, if the grade increment is 0.5, there will be a significant
number of increments where the data provided is “<7”. If the grade
increment is 1.0, there will significantly fewer increments affected.
Please advise which grade increment you wish to use for your request.

Yours sincerely,

Landon Watt

From: Mr Huang

Dear Landon Watt,

Thanks for responding to my request. To clarify, I am happy to amend my request to instead ask for program completions rather than graduations. Furthermore, I am happy to receive data for 2021, alongside data for 2020-2018, understanding that the 2021 data may be incomplete.

With regards to the grade increment, I would like to request both sets of data, one with the grade increment set at 0.5, and the other at 1.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Huang
