COVID-19 Data for Deaf People (to aim the 90% goal)

Michael Heuberger made this Official Information request to Ministry of Health

Ministry of Health did not have the information requested.

From: Michael Heuberger

Good evening Ministry of Health

I'm a Deaf programmer and found you share valuable COVID-19 Data on GitHub https://github.com/minhealthnz/nz-covid-...

Our NZ Deaf Community cares a lot about each other but we feel left out during investigations. Most COVID stats are compared by location and ethnicity but not by us, by Deaf people.

We would like to encourage more Deaf people to get vaccinated. To achieve the 90% goal. We are a minority and understand NZSL best (New Zealand Sign Language). That said, can you please pass this further to the IT development?

The idea here is not to share API data only by ethnicity but also by language and Deaf people (NZSL). This will help everyone of us to prioritise our actions to achieve this big goal, to vaccinate Aotearoa by 90% including Deaf people left out by media.

Best regards
Michael Heuberger

Kia ora Michael,

Thank you for your correspondence on 8 October 2021 for:

Thank you for your suggestion. Unfortunately, the Ministry of Health does
not hold a definitive data set of people who are deaf or use NZSL so we
cannot create a list of deaf people who are vaccinated.  There is
currently some cross government work using the Integrated Data
Infrastructure held by Statistics New Zealand to analyse various cohorts.
Your suggestion has been passed onto this group to consider if it’s
possible and fits in with their priorities.

Thank you for writing to the Ministry.
