Please find below our response to your request for information in respect
of Watercare’s 10-year plan for serving Auckland residents.

Watercare is fortunate to have a diverse range of water sources – dams,
rivers and aquifers. This means we can balance production rates at our
treatment plants to ensure we are making the best use of the water sources
we have available.

For example, if our small dams in the Waitākere Ranges are full and close
to spilling, we maximise production at our Huia and Waitākere water
treatment plants that treat water from these dams. At the moment, with
Auckland still recovering from 2020's severe drought, we are minimising
production at our Ardmore Water Treatment Plant, which treats water from
our four Hūnua dams, and maximising production at our Waikato water
treatment plants, where we treat water from the Waikato River. This eases
the pressure on our Hūnua dams, allowing them to fill up as much as
possible when it rains.

Simultaneously, we continue to closely monitor and report on the
long-range of weather forecasts, water demand and other lead indicators to
ensure appropriate mitigation is put in place to meet the demand of
growing Auckland.

In addition to this, in December 2013, Watercare applied to take a further
200 million litres of water a day from the Waikato River. On 30 June 2020,
after considering advice provided by the Environmental Protection
Authority, the Minister for the Environment issued a direction under
Section 142(2) of the RMA to call in Watercare’s 2013 application and
refer it to a Board of Inquiry for determination. Watercare had then
updated the application to address a range of matters, with the most
significant revision resulting directly from Watercare’s ongoing
engagement with Waikato-Tainui since the application was lodged with
Waikato Regional Council, being a reduction in the volume of the proposed
water take from 200,000 m3 /day (net) to 150,000 m3 /day (net). The
Minister for the Environment appointed an independent Board of Inquiry on
10 August 2020 to hear and decide the Watercare Waikato River water take
proposal. The hearing is now scheduled to commence in the week of Monday 4
October 2021. If consented, a new take from the Waikato River would enable
Watercare to ensure security of supply during a drought between 2025-2027
and meet peak demand for well more than the next ten years.

Find out more about Auckland's current water supply, why water
restrictions are used, and how we're making the region's water supply more
resilient. See:
[1]https://www.watercare.co.nz/Water-and-wa...
This makes it easier for you to understand our current water supply
situation as well as access information about more severe restrictions.

We are happy to provide any further information if you may require. We
appreciate your concern about meeting the water demand for growing
Auckland.

Ngā mihi
Rob
