Video/photo evidence and traffic infringements

R. M. Sweeney made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police

The request was successful.

From: R. M. Sweeney

Dear New Zealand Police,

Can a traffic infringement ticket be issued based on video or photo evidence submitted by the public? For example, footage captured on a dashcam of a driver failing to stop at a red light, or a photo of a motorbike rider in a bicycle lane? If so, how should the public go about making a submission?

Yours faithfully,

Rory Sweeney

Kia ora Mr Sweeney

I have been advised by the Police Infringements Bureau (PIB) team leader
that there are two options for making a submission.

The first is using Roadwatch where a letter is sent out advising of the
alleged incident however no notice is issued and the form is available
online. Here is the link
[1]https://www.police.govt.nz/about-us/publ...

The second is a formal complaint and if the person making the complaint is
willing to appear as a witness in the case of a Not Guilty hearing, then
an Officer (not PIB) can then view the alleged offence then submit a
Section 118 letter (request for information from the registered owner as
to who the driver was) then interview if required then issue a notice.
